Firestone Complete Auto Care in Delaware hosts Car Care Academy for local Girl Scouts

Firestone Complete Auto Care employees educate Girl Scouts

In February, Carlee Morgan, Manager of Tire Sales for Firestone Complete Auto Care in Dover, Delaware, hosted a group of Girl Scouts and leaders in the store's vehicle service department. They came to learn the basics of automotive maintenance, one of the requirements of the Girl Scouts Car Care Badge.

The scout troop leader had tried for more than a year to find such an opportunity for the young women and was finally connected to Carlee through a global Facebook community for female mechanics. When Carlee saw the post, she knew this would be a great opportunity to give back to the community in which she and her team live, work and play in a way that aligns perfectly with the trusted tire and automotive service her team provides every day. Area Manager Brandon Benicasa gave his full support and employee Adam Pomales, Service Manager, was happy to help with the instruction.

Carlee based the workshop's agenda on the badge requirements, teaching the girls how to check fluid levels and tire pressure, change an air filter and windshield wiper blades, replace a flat tire, jump-start a dead battery and more. Given the opportunity to practice everything they learned, the girls remained engaged throughout the workshop.

"Some were already driving and the rest had that to look forward to," Carlee said. "It was very practical and meaningful to them at this stage in their lives and it was great that we had this opportunity to stress how important regular maintenance is when it comes to keeping vehicles safe on the road." Carlee also made sure each scout had her own tire pressure gauge and safety glasses to use at home.

The purpose of the Girl Scouts Car Care Badge is to teach senior scouts safe driving tips and how to take care of a car, as well about fuel efficiency and engineering. Providing basic car care instruction to local youth aligns with Our Way to Serve, particularly the People priority area.
