Bridgestone Americas Manufacturing Group (BAMG) recently selected the second-quarter 2019 winners of its Classroom of the Quarter grant program. Science teachers from West Middle School and Central Middle School in the Muscatine Community School District were selected for their application, titled, "The Air We Breathe."
Through this initiative, students at the schools will learn causes of air pollution and investigate various pollutants, such as toxic gases and particulate matter. Students will then examine technologies developed by engineers to reduce air pollution, and they will build data-collecting air quality detectors that will be placed at various locations around the community after different weather events. They will act as environmental engineers and present their findings to local engineers in the community, as well as other students. Through this semester-long activity, students will build science skills, engineering-design process skills and professional communications skills.
BAMG created the Classroom of the Quarter grant program to ensure students in the Muscatine Community School District receive a quality, well-rounded education. Bridgestone awards $500 to a teacher or team of teachers each quarter to help provide the resources they need to shape the classroom environment and enhance learning for every child.
