Penn State Racing Formula SAE team visits Bridgestone

Students from the Pennsylvania State University College of Engineering recently visited the Americas Technical Center (ATC) as part of the Penn State Racing Formula SAE team. Formula SAE is a design competition that challenges teams of university undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world to conceive, design, fabricate, develop and compete with small, formula-style vehicles. The competition provides students with an opportunity to apply their engineering, organizational and communication skills in an industry-like setting.

While at the ATC, the team showcased their progress on their new 2018 racecar, featuring a full carbon fiber monocoque. The entire car is designed and fabricated by the students, except for the Yamaha R6 engine used to power the vehicle. While on their visit, the team utilized the Kinematics and Compliance testing machine at the Tire Testing Laboratory to characterize their vehicle frame and suspension. This will provide them with valuable knowledge for the design portion of their competition, as well as next year's vehicle set-up and design.
